Inspiring She Boss Series: Anita Roddick, Founder of The Body Shop

Dame Anita Roddick’s Story

First, let’s start with how cool it is that her name is DAME Anita Roddick. If anyone knows my husband, please convince him that I need this title. I digress. Anyway, Roddick started The Body Shop in 1976 in England. Tons of controversy around this but that’s a topic for another day. The goal was to have an ethical way to buy natural beauty products. You can now find The Body Shop around 60 countries with 22k employees! Roddick definitely knew a thing or two about business growth.

Sadly, in 2007 Roddick shared that she had been diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Roddick passed a few months later after suffering from a brain hemorrhage. She left her entire estate to charities.

Dame Roddick’s advice and why it matters to you, She Bosses.

“If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.” – Dame Anita Roddick Dame Anita Roddick

Okay, so this reminds me of yesterday’s advice from Clara Barton.  Always be willing to work a little harder to do it better.

Does seeing another coach in your niche stress you out? Someone offering a program similar to yours and it makes you afraid? It shouldn’t. Don’t let competition make you nervous or afraid to put yourself out there.

Whatever your competitors are doing, do it better. Be different from them. Maybe they are offering something similar but your customer service is 20x better. Guess who is going to get the recommendation? YOU.

Be you. Don’t second guess yourself and your business. Only you know your business and you are capable of making it successful.

I have faith in you. Make sure you have faith in yourself.
